Projects and Programmes Public realm improvements · Continued rollout of 20mph speed limit on an area by area basis across the borough to improve road safety, discourage through traffic using residential streets and to improve the local environment and quality of life for local people. · Lobby for re-zoning of East Croydon and West Croydon stations from zone 5 to zone 4. · Support the expansion of car clubs across Croydon to reduce the need for car ownership. · Provision of publicly accessible electronic vehicle charging points. · Encouragement and support for residents to establish Play Streets in local areas. · Cycling - introduction of a bike hire scheme in Croydon; provision of better and more cycle parking facilities; implementation of Quietways - cycle routes connecting key locations in Croydon and neighbouring boroughs.
Improving air quality · Air pollution is a major public health issue. In Croydon, 155 deaths each year are caused by long term exposure to air pollution. The Croydon Air Quality Action Plan is being updated to address local causes of air pollution and to mitigate impacts.
Local Implementation Plan · Funding through TfL to implement the Mayor of London transport policies locally.
Fiveways junction improvement · The objective is to improve traffic flow and bus movement through Fiveways (junction of A23/A232) and conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. Two proposals were developed and consulted on. Construction starts summer 2019 and the project is scheduled to be substantially completed (opened and operating) by December 2021.
South London Freight Consolidation project · Joint project between Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth and Croydon councils. This project is funded through the Mayors Air Quality Fund and the principle aim to reduce the number of delivery and servicing vehicles travelling through the boroughs which will in turn reduce congestion and improve air quality.
Street lighting · Joint PFI project with L.B. Lewisham for renewal of street lighting infrastructure across the borough. |
Policy Developments · Modern Transport Bill aims to encourage investment in autonomous and electric vehicles. · The Mayor of London’s manifesto outlines transport in the capital as one of his priorities and includes number of measures. · The Mayor is seeking to improve air quality in London. |
