Family Healthy Behaviours Service Variation report

Early childhood is a crucial period for establishing healthy eating habits and preventing obesity. Research has shown that dietary patterns and taste preferences formed during the early years can persist into adulthood, underscoring the importance of early intervention (4). Nutrition education and support for families during this critical period can play a vital role in promoting healthy eating habits and reducing the risk of obesity.

In Croydon, HENRY has been delivering the Family Healthy Behaviours services since 2022, providing a two-tiered approach to support families with children aged 0-7 years.

Croydon’s vision for Early Years is for ‘All children achieve the best possible development, health, wellbeing and education outcomes from before pregnancy to the end of reception (aged 5-6) and for children to feel safe, secure and loved’.

In addition, the Executive Mayor is committed to ensure ‘Children and young people in Croydon have the chance to thrive, learn and fulfil their potential’.

The Corporate Director for Adult Social Care and Health is recommended to approve a variation to the contract with Henry to expand and enhance the Family Healthy Behaviours service through:

  • Upscaling delivery of Starting Solids workshops, joining up the infant feeding pathway between maternity and health visiting, supporting parents in preparation for their child’s weaning journey, establishing healthy food choices from the start.
  • Expansion of the Healthy Families Growing Up programme to be available for families with children aged 7-12 years, reducing the gap in provision for primary school children.
